Confirmed Learning Objectives for USM


Following are confirmed learning objectives for the 2011 Updates in Sleep Medicine conference.  We will post additional learning objectives as they are confirmed by our faculty, so please check back often!

As a result of this activity the learner will:

  • Recognize that the lack of proper forward growth of the face is endemic in civilized societies
  • Understand that the lack of forward facial growth can dramatically decrease the oro and nasopharyngeal airways with OSA resulting
  • Understand that retractive orthodontic treatment only potentiates these unfavorable growth patterns which reduce the airway
  • Recognize that alternative techniques exist to produce more forward development of the face with subsequent improvement in the airway
  • Recognize that previous retractive orthodontic results can be reversed and OSA may be eliminated by the process
  • Understand that the primary focus of treatment for OSA needs to include consideration of the anteroposterior plane of space and optimizing forward development of the face to prevent OSA
  • Understand the emerging data, from multiple sources, on the range of normal human sleep behavior, and recognize the relevance of this to clinical goals in the management of the insomnia patient
  • Recognize the changing role of medications in the management of insomnia, and the impact this is having on drug development
  • Understand the data on insomnia consequences, and the impact this will likely have on therapeutic targets
  • Recognize symptoms of sleepiness in children
  • Define symptoms of narcolepsy in children
  • Describe methods of evaluation and management of the sleepy child
  • Grasp the individual pathophysiologic traits that lead to obstructive sleep apnea
  • Understand how individual physiologic characteristics can be determined and modeled
  • Use the information on physiologic traits and characteristics to tailor individual therapy for each apnea patient
  • Review the definition, diagnosis and current World Health Organization classification of pulmonary arterial hypertension as it relates to sleep apnea
  • Define the prevalence and natural history of pulmonary hypertension associated with sleep apnea
  • Increase understanding of the effects of treatment of sleep apnea on pulmonary hemodynamics
  • Discuss diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms for the management of patients with pulmonary hypertension and sleep apnea
  • Become familiar with the features of RBD, its evaluation, and its therapy
  • Become familiar with the strong association of RBD with parkinsonian disorders
  • Become familiar with the cardinal features of SRED, its evaluation, and its therapy
  • Become familiar with the cardinal features of Sexsomnia, its evaluation, and its therapy
  • Become familiar with circadian rhythms.
  • Identify factors contributing to disruptions to circadian rhythms.
  • Recognize strategies for improving adaptation to shift work
  • Become familiar with strategies for reducing the effects of jet lag.
  • Recognize the risk factors in cardio vascular disease that signal possible sleep disorder.
  • Know what tests to order when a sleep test is needed.
  • Order the right PAP modality in patients with cardio vascular disease and sleep apnea
  • Understand the growing incidence of around-the-clock performance demands that go beyond relatively regular shift-work systems and solutions.
  • Recognize that extended work scenarios frequently affect essential services often accompanied by crucial and high-responsibility decision-making processes.
  • Learn the differences between monophasic and polyphasic sleep.
  • Examine data that support polyphasic sleep as one preferred strategy to optimize effectiveness and minimize performance and cognitive impairment resulting from sleep reduction during certain around-the-clock situations.
  • Examine techniques for sleep/alertness management adopted in various scenarios
  • Recognize the differentiation of OHS from OSAHS
  • Understand the pathophysiologic mechanisms that lead to hypercapnia in OHS
  • Appreciate the clinical presentation, clinical implications and goals of therapy for OHS
  • Recognize the limitations of APAP therapy for sleep apnea treatment
  • Review appropriate use of home sleep testing
  • Learn countermeasures for treating jet lag
  • Understanding CBT's role in treating primary insomnia
