2010 Learning Objectives

Our faculty have established the learning objectives for their presentations and we publish them here for your information and understanding of the scope of the learning experience at the 8th Annual Updates in Sleep Medicine.

As a result of this activity the learner will:

  1. Compare and contrast the types of diagnostic devices used for out-of-lab testing for sleep apnea
  2. Discuss the appropriate population for limited channel testing
  3. Review potential algorithms for use of out-of-lab testing and how to utilize it appropriately in the sleep center
  4. Consider sleep apnea in children with an ADHD diagnosis
  5. Recommend tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy in children with OSA and with enlarged tonsils
  6. Recommend appropriate testing of children suspected of having OSA
  7. Acquire a general background of who has OSA and uses CPAP
  8. Define CPAP compliance and acquire CPAP rates of compliance
  9. Understand variables related to predicting CPAP compliance, including PSG and psychological factors
  10. Learn the available tools and resources to improve CPAP compliance
  11. Improve understanding of endocrinological correlates of normal and disrupted sleep
  12. Improve understanding of the effects of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) on normal endocrine function
  13. Improve understanding of the role of endocrine disruption associated with OSA in the pathophysiological correlates of OSA
  14. Learn to recognize the association of specific endocrine pathologies with elevated risk of OSA
  15. Understand the primary causes of sleep disordered breathing in children
  16. Understand the differences between various abnormal respiratory events in children
  17. Understand the differences between identification of sleep apnea in children and adults
  18. Describe the symptoms of excessive sleepiness in children (Sheldon)
  19. Understand the differences between the clinical presentations of sleepiness in children when compared to adults
  20. Understand methods of diagnosis and management of excessive sleepiness in children
  21. Review the current literature as regards efficacy of dental appliances and Obstructive Sleep Apnea
  22. Review current dental appliances available on the market and their applications
  23. Review the American Academy of Sleep Medicine policy regarding utilization of dental appliances
  24. Understand the epidemiology of Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)
  25. Understand the pathophysiology of RLS
  26. Understand the physical and mental health correlates of RLS
  27. Understand the rational use of medications in the treatment of patients with RLS
  28. Understand the correlates between sleep disorders and stroke
  29. Learn to recognize the physical associations of OSA and stroke
  30. Review the incidence of stroke and death in patients with OSA
  31. Review sleep apnea as a risk factor for stroke independent from other risk factors
  32. Review the incidence of sleep-wake cycle disorders and insomnia in stroke patients
  33. Understand the use of sleep apnea treatment after stroke
