George M. Matuschak, M.D.

Dr. Matuschak serves as clinical professor of internal medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at Saint Louis University School of Medicine and is a member of the Division of Pulmonology at Mercy Clinic, St. Louis.

He has worked in pulmonary disease and critical care medicine for more than 27 years, earning consecutive awards as one of the Best Doctors in America in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine for the last ten years. Among many notable achievements for Dr. Matuschak: the American College of Chest Physicians presented him with the Alfred Soffer Research Award and the Society of Critical Care Medicine has twice recognized him with President’s Citations.

Dr. Matuschak has regularly contributed to scientific journals and books for the last two decades as a writer or consultant. He has edited several books and journals, most recently serving as Associate Editor for Intensive Care Medicine. He has served on 13 Federal Government Advisory Committees, most of which were initiated by the National Institutes of Health. He has served as principal investigator for numerous national, multicenter pharmaceutical clinical trials, for federally-funded research for the National Institutes of Health and foundation-funded research for the American Heart Association. Particular among his interests is pulmonary hypertension and acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Dr. Matuschak earned his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine and completed his residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center, followed by fellowships at University Health Center of Pittsburgh in critical care medicine and pulmonary disease. His areas of clinical expertise include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary hypertension and sleep-disordered breathing.
