Eric D. Powell, Ph.D.

Dr. Eric Powell is the Director of Research at Clayton Sleep Institute.  In that capacity he oversees all research studies and procedures performed by CSI, including investigator-initiated research protocol development.  He also serves as an adjunct Instructor of the Department of Psychology at Saint Louis University, St. Louis, and as Adjunct Assistant Professor of the Department of Internal Medicine at the Saint Louis University School of Medicine.

As a researcher, Dr. Powell serves as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on studies of sleep disorders and related diseases and conditions, such as insomnia, pain and sleep, stress and sleep and CPAP compliance.  Under Dr. Powell’s direction, the Research Center at Clayton Sleep Institute executes studies supported by major pharmaceutical and medical device companies, and CSI is a study site for various multi-center industry-sponsored clinical trials.

As a guest speaker, Dr. Powell lectures regularly at national conferences on sleep disorders and related diseases and presented two original studies at the national 2006 SLEEP conference, sponsored by the Associated Professional Sleep Societies.  He regularly presents at their annual meetings.  Dr. Powell has published in scholarly journals such as Journal of General Psychology and Physiology and Behavior, and has co-authored numerous peer-reviewed articles.

Dr, Powell earned his Ph.D. in Neuroscience/Experimental Psychology from Saint Louis University.  He also holds a Master of Science (Research) degree in Experimental Psychology/Neuroscience and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Saint Louis University.  Previously he was clinical research associate and supervisor at the Washington University Multidisciplinary Sleep Medicine Center, Department of Neurology, School of Medicine in St. Louis, and managed the Sleep Disorders/EEG lab at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital BJC Health Care in St. Louis.  He is a member of the Sleep Research Society.
