George M. Matuschak, M.D.

Dr. George Matuschak serves as Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine at Saint Louis University School of Medicine and as Staff Physician, Department of Pulmonary Medicine, at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis.  Prior to these positions, Dr. Matuschak served as the director of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine and as the James B. and Ethyl D. Miller Professor of Internal Medicine at Saint Louis University School of Medicine.  He also served as the Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit Service of Saint Louis University Hospital.  

He has worked in pulmonary disease and critical care medicine for more than 24 years, earning consecutive annual awards as one of the Best Doctors in America in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine for the last seven years.  Among many notable achievements for Dr. Matuschak, the American College of Chest Physicians presented him with the Alfred Soffer Research Award and the Society of Critical Care Medicine has twice recognized him with President’s Citations.

Dr. Matuschak has regularly contributed to scientific journals and books for the last two decades as a writer or consultant — and has edited several books and journals, most recently serving as Associate Editor for Intensive Care Medicine.  He has served on 12 Federal Government Advisory Committees, most of which were initiated by the National Institutes of Health.  He has served as principal investigator and co-investigator for numerous national, multicenter pharmaceutical clinical trials, for federally-funded research for the National Institutes of Health and foundation-funded research for the American Heart Association.  Particular among his research interests is pulmonary hypertension and acute respiratory distress syndrome.

As part of his leadership role for Saint Louis University School of Medicine, Dr. Matuschak co-directs the Phase 2 Respiratory System Module for second year medical students and also directs The Irving J. Selikoff Endowed Fund in Pulmonary Environmental and Occupational Medicine Research.

Dr. Matuschak earned his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine and completed a residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center, followed by fellowships at University Health Center of Pittsburgh in critical care medicine and in pulmonary disease.  His areas of clinical expertise include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary hypertension and sleep-disordered breathing.
