David M. Rapoport, M.D.


David M. Rapoport, M.D., is Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Research Director of the Mount Sinai Health System Integrative Sleep Center of the Mount Sinai-National Jewish Health Respiratory Institute. He has recently moved from New York University to lead a major expansion in the research program for the Mount Sinai Sleep Center, with a focus on the pathophysiology, epidemiology and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea.

Dr. Rapoport has a longstanding interest in the physiology of sleep disordered breathing and was one of the early contributors to the development of nasal CPAP as a treatment for sleep apnea. He holds multiple U.S. and European patents for improvements on nasal CPAP. He was the principal investigator of the New York University site of the Sleep Heart Health Study, a National Institute of Health sponsored multicenter epidemiologic study on Sleep Disordered Breathing and Cardiovascular Disease. He is involved in multiple NIH and industry-sponsored clinical trials and consults with companies developing novel treatments for sleep apnea.

Dr. Rapoport is the founder and President of the Foundation for Research in Sleep Disorders, a non-profit organization that supports sleep research through grants and fellowship stipends. The Foundation contributes to the education of future sleep scientists and to research leading to the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic techniques in sleep medicine.

He is on the Medical Advisory Board of the American Sleep Apnea Association and served previously on the board of directors for the group.

Dr. Rapoport received an undergraduate degree in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his MD from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He trained in Internal Medicine at the Roosevelt Hospital and completed a Pulmonary Fellowship at New York University Medical Center/Bellevue. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine and Sleep Medicine.
