David P. White, M.D.

David White, MD, serves as a Professor of Medicine at the Harvard Medical School, Senior Physician, Division of Sleep Medicine at Brigham and Womenís Hospital and as Chief Medical Officer for Philips Respironics.  Previously White served as Director of the Clinical Sleep Disorders Program at Brigham and Womenís, and was on the faculty at Penn State University Medical Center and the University of Colorado Health Science Center. 

His primary research interest over his career has been the pathophysiology of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).  He has studied many aspects of OSA including upper airway motor control, the control of breathing during wakefulness and sleep and pharyngeal anatomy.  White is a widely published researcher and a frequent lecturer on the pathophysiology, monitoring, diagnosing and treatment of sleep disorders.

White has served the field of sleep medicine in many national and international leadership roles with professional societies associated with sleep and pulmonary medicine.  He was past-president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, Chair of the Advisory Board of the National Center on Sleep Disorders Research (NIH) and Chair of the Task Force to write the 2003 NIH Research Plan in the area of sleep and its disorders. He also served as a member of the American Board of Internal Medicineís Test Committees for both Sleep and Pulmonary Medicine.  Finally, he has served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal SLEEP

White is board certified in sleep disorders medicine, internal medicine, pulmonary disease and, in the past, critical care medicine.  He is a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the American Thoracic Society, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the American Association of Physicians.  He earned a B.S. degree from Washington and Lee University and obtained his medical school training at Emory University.
